English Proficiency Exam Sample

The Proficiency Exam has been designed using the Common European Framework (CEF) level B1 The four sections of the exam – Speaking, Use of English & Reading, Listening, Writing – are carried out on two consecutive days. All four sections of the Proficiency Exam have equal weight (25% each).

You can download some ‘sample’ questions for each section. Please keep in mind that these sample questions are limited and do not equate to the number of questions in the exam.

The schedule for the exam is as follows;

WRITTEN EXAM     

The written exam consists of three sections which are Listening, Use of English & Reading, and Writing.

SECTION I  :  LISTENING/NOTE TAKING

In this section, the students listen to a lecture twice and answer the related questions based on the notes they have taken.

Part 2. Reading Comprehension 

The students read two texts in this part and answer the related questions. The question types are mainly as follows;

  • guessing the meaning from the context

SECTION III WRITING

In this section of the exam, the students are expected to write an academic essay of at least 250 words. -minimum four paragraphs-

SPEAKING EXAM

In this section, the students answer questions of general knowledge and the exam lasts about ten minutes (per student). The students’ performance is evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Grammar and Accuracy
  • Fluency
  • Pronunciation
  • Vocabulary
