Psychological Counseling and Guidance Unit
♦ Higher education youth encompasses a period in an individual’s life that coincides with the final stages of adolescence.
♦ During this period, young people distance themselves from the home and family environment, make decisions on their own, and take responsibility for the consequences. They deal with issues such as accommodation, nutrition, academic success, friendships, dating, financial support, and health, while being responsible for solving problems related to personal integrity, identity formation, and self-development for their chosen profession.
♦ In this period, young individuals are more closely concerned with the sociological, political, and economic issues of society and humanity, reflecting on these matters. They consciously contemplate traditions, values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. They are anxious about completing their education successfully in their chosen field and finding a job after graduation. During this process, they also strive to discover their identity. Of course, the person responsible for solving, deciding, and planning these problems is the young individual themselves. However, during this challenging period, the young person requires support. This is where Guidance comes into play:
♦ Guidance is professional assistance provided to help an individual understand themselves, solve life’s challenges, make realistic decisions about themselves, develop their full potential, communicate and adapt effectively with their environment, and achieve self-actualization.
♦ At Piri Reis University, the goal is to contribute to students’ development as a consistent and healthy whole, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Work in the Guidance and Psychological Counseling Service is carried out by a Clinical Psychologist. It is important to make an appointment for a session to ensure that the meetings are conducted in a healthy manner.
♦ Throughout this process, confidentiality, trust, and respect for personal rights are fundamental. The aim is to help students by listening non-judgmentally and unconditionally, responding with openness and honesty, and assisting them in resolving the issues they face.
Please read the following explanations before making an application! ► The Guidance and Psychological Counseling Service is located at the Deniz Campus, B Block Ground Floor (B-Z12).
► Confidentiality is a fundamental principle in psychological counseling. What is discussed in counseling remains between the student and the specialist they work with.
► If there is a risk of the student harming themselves or others, the information will be shared with the relevant authorities as required by regulations for protective purposes. This will occur with the student’s knowledge and consent.
► Each session typically lasts 45 minutes.
► The duration and frequency of sessions are determined based on the intensity of the issue, the individual’s expectations, and the specialist’s clinical assessment. Sessions may be focused on a specific problem and short-term, or they may extend over a longer period.
► It is the responsibility of the client to follow up on the sessions. If a session needs to be canceled, it must be done at least one day in advance.
