Piri Reis University, named after the famous Turkish sailor and scientist Piri Reis, aims to serve the maritime sector by training sailors, engineers, managers, and industry experts, while also researching Turkish maritime history and passing on this knowledge to future generations. In this context, the 1st International Eurasian Maritime History Congress, themed on Turkish Maritime History, was held in Istanbul from November 5-8, 2012. During this congress, 101 papers were presented by academics and researchers from 21 countries. During the congress, with the participation of the attendees, the “World Maritime Historians Association – International Association of Maritime Studies, IAMS2012” was established, and it was unanimously agreed that Piri Reis University would carry out the presidency and secretariat activities of the newly established association.

Following the declaration of 2013 as the Piri Reis Year by UNESCO in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the 1513 Piri Reis World Map, Piri Reis University participated in various events held both domestically and internationally. During these activities, it was deemed necessary to establish a maritime history research center within the university to encourage and develop research activities on Turkish maritime history. Thus, the Maritime History Application and Research Center was founded on September 19, 2013, to collect and enhance maritime history studies, both past and ongoing, under one roof for better promotion of Turkish maritime history worldwide. Since its establishment, the center has continued to actively participate in national and international academic activities.
